Reconnect with nature, longhouse style
A flight into Bakalalan means a getaway off the beaten track. Situated on a highland plateau in the interior of Sarawak, the region, bordering Indonesia's Kalimantan, is greatly popular for its jungle trekking and is a welcome breath of fresh air.
Valleys are peppered with settlements of cottage-like homes, surrounded by paddy fields and boast many high peaks including Sarawak's highest, the 2,423-metre Gunung Murud. Bakalalan is Malaysia's home to apple farms. One of the treasures at Bakalalan is the existence of salt-water wells from which the villagers process into salt, a product that helps uplift their economic well being.
